ADRA Cambodia collaborated with Preah Vihear Provincial Health Department and local authorities to promote “We Need Food, Not Tobacco” while raising awareness of nutrition, food security, early marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence.
PREAH VIHEAR, May 31, 2023 – Members of ADRA Cambodia’s TOGETHER project team, in collaboration with Provincial Health Department and local authorities, celebrated World No Tobacco Day 2023 in Chey Sen district of Preah Vihear Province on May 31, 2023.
In cooperation with the Provincial Departments of Health and local authority leaders, 250 participants (150 females) joined the event.
The event focused on the theme of “We Need Food, Not Tobacco” to highlight how tobacco growing harms health, the health of farmers, and the planet’s health. For example, the tobacco industry interferes with attempts to substitute tobacco growing, contributing to the global food crisis.
This event was part of the global World No Tobacco Day campaign addressing the worldwide issues of tobacco growers. This campaign encourages governments to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.
The event also raised awareness of women and girls’ rights by highlighting key findings from TOGETHER project’s Year 2 survey and gender analysis related to early marriage and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) which are critical areas of focus for TOGETHER.
ADRA Cambodia is implementing the “uniting TOwards Gender Equality for enjoyment of women’s and girls’ Total HEalth and Rights” (TOGETHER) project thanks to generous funding from the Government of Canada. Supported by ADRA Canada, SickKids, and Salanga, this gender-transformative 6-year project will ensure that nearly 200,000 girls, women, boys, and men in Cambodia, Kenya, the Philippines, and Uganda are enabled to exercise their health-related human rights.
