Pursat Province, Cambodia, September 25, 2024 – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Cambodia, in collaboration with ADRA Korea, proudly announces the inauguration of a new cafeteria and handwashing station at Koul Totung Primary School, Kravanh District, Pursat Province. Completed on September 18, 2024, the construction, with its process began on August 26, 2023, represents a significant enhancement of the school’s facilities, with a total cost of $13,881.50. This milestone was made possible through the generous support of several institutions, including:

  • Sahmyook Primary School
  • Gwangju Sahmyook Elementary School
  • Daegu Sahmyook Elementary School
  • Donghae Sahmyook Elementary School
  • Busan Sahmyook Elementary School

The new cafeteria, measuring 8 meters by 16 meters, and the handwashing station, sized 0.75 meters high, 0.75 meters wide, and 2 meters long, address long-standing issues related to inadequate facilities at the school. Previously, students had to dine in cramped, deteriorating wooden structures or in classrooms, which negatively impacted both hygiene and the learning environment. These new facilities provide a clean and comfortable dining area, fostering healthier habits and enhancing the overall educational experience. ADRA Korea and its donors also contributed 21 classroom tables, further supporting the school’s development.

During the inauguration ceremony, local officials and ADRA representatives highlighted the enduring partnership between ADRA Cambodia and ADRA Korea through the Cambodia Child Sponsorship Program (CCSP). Mr. Rith Saray, CCSP Project Manager, reflected on the program’s 14-year impact in Kravanh District, which aims to uplift underprivileged children through improved education, health, and well-being. Since its inception in 2010, the CCSP has supported over 480 students across 11 locations, providing essential resources, vocational training, and sanitation facilities in 9 villages in Kravanh District, as well as in Damrei Sar Village, Kandieng District, and Keo Mony Village, Sampov Meas District.

Mr. Rith Saray also showcased other successes of the CCSP, including the construction of Srea Pongrol Primary School, vocational training programs for farmers, and ongoing health and hygiene education for children and their families. The project, supported by South Korean artist Kim Junsoo and ADRA Korea, exemplifies the power of international collaboration to foster sustainable development in rural areas. Mr. Saray emphasized the program’s broader goals of boosting local economies, expanding educational opportunities, promoting healthy living, and protecting the environment for vulnerable communities.

Mr. Ik Hyun Kim, Director of ADRA Korea, expressed his deep appreciation to the donors, stating, “We are deeply grateful to those whose generosity has brought about this remarkable transformation. The new facilities not only provide a safe and clean environment for students but also demonstrate God’s love and care for these children and their future.”

Mrs. Kim Eunja, Head of Education at the Adventist Union Conference, also expressed her support, stressing the vital role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. “The construction of this cafeteria and handwashing station is crucial in creating a safe and supportive learning environment. This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing community needs and shaping a brighter future,” she said.

Mr. Theam Sophat, District Governor of Kravanh, attended the event and commended ADRA’s unwavering commitment to rural development, aligning with national education reforms championed by Prime Minister Hun Manet. “This project showcases how international cooperation can uplift local communities. I thank ADRA, ADRA Korea, and all contributors for your dedication to enhancing the lives of our children. These facilities will have a lasting impact on our community,” Mr. Sophat stated.

He concluded the event by acknowledging ADRA’s extensive influence in the region. “ADRA’s efforts have not only improved the lives of children here but have also strengthened our community. We look forward to continued collaboration on future initiatives that benefit the people of Pursat.”

The inauguration was attended by 849 participants, including local government leaders, educators, students, and parents from neighboring communities, all celebrating this significant achievement. The ceremonial handover of the new facilities marked a joyful milestone, ushering in a new era of progress for Koul Totung Primary School and its students.
